Dear Fire Lake Staff and Families,

Last night, the Anchorage School Board voted to close Fire Lake Elementary School at the end of this school year.

I know this news is difficult for many members of the Fire Lake community.

Fire Lake has been a place of learning, relationships, and shared experiences for students, families, and staff. The connections built among its community of students, families and educators are meaningful and lasting. We recognize the emotions that accompany a transition like this and the importance of supporting students and staff carefully in the months ahead.

Our focus now turns fully to ensuring a thoughtful transition for every student and staff member.

What This Means for Students Next Year

Beginning in the 2026 to 2027 school year, Fire Lake students will transition as follows:

  • Three SLC classrooms will relocate to Alpenglow Elementary
  • Approximately 153 students will attend Eagle River Elementary
  • Approximately 8 students will attend Chugiak Elementary

This transition plan reflects adjustments made following earlier community feedback, particularly regarding geography and program continuity.

In the coming weeks, ASD will share detailed information regarding school assignments, transportation, timelines, and opportunities for students and families to connect with their new school communities.

The Fire Lake Facility

The Fire Lake facility will become the future home of Eagle Academy Charter School beginning next school year.

We recognize that this aspect of the transition may carry mixed emotions. While the building will continue serving students, we understand that it represents years of memories and community for Fire Lake families and staff.

Supporting Students and Staff

Our commitment is steady: ensuring every student continues to feel known, supported, and safe throughout this transition.

Students will have opportunities to visit their new schools, meet staff, and build relationships before the fall so that the start of the school year feels welcoming and familiar. Counselors and support staff will be available to assist students and families as needed.

To our Fire Lake staff: this decision affects you both personally and professionally. Your dedication to students and to this community has been visible and deeply valued. District leadership and Human Resources will work directly with you regarding placements and next steps. We are committed to communicating clearly and treating every staff member with respect and care.

Looking Forward

This decision reflects the difficult realities facing the district and the need to align facilities with enrollment in order to protect classroom instruction and core academic programs across ASD.

Even so, we recognize that transitions bring very real emotions. Fire Lake has been a special school community, and its positive impact on students will endure for years to come. What makes Fire Lake strong is its community of students, families, and educators. As this community transitions into new school environments, the relationships, care, and commitment built here will continue in those new spaces.

Our responsibility now is to provide stability for students, support for staff, and respect for the legacy of this school community.

With sincerity and respect,

Jharrett Bryantt, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Anchorage School District
